I remember Luis as one of those special people one can consider as a lifelong friend even when your correspondence was irregular and your opportunities to meet were sporadic. Your friendship could pick up where you left off during your last encounter. While his friendliness and openness were the immediate qualities that attracted one to him upon meeting, he was "un homme serieux" (the best accolade that Charles de Gaulle could give to someone). From our first encounters through ISNAR, and later during the founding of ECAPAPA and the development of ASARECA, Luis has been a presence. During his courageous confrontation with cancer we had a periodic exchange of correspondence which always included something serious (usually about eastern and southern Africa) and something humorous. This is how I remember our friend. Howard
