INNOVATION AND TECHNOLOGY IN AGRICULTURE,
FOOD INDUSTRY, RURAL ENERGY & PHYSICAL INFRASTRUCTURE - GHANA, KENYA,
MOZAMBIQUE, TANZANIA, UGANDA & RWANDA
CALL FOR CONCEPT NOTES - CONFERENCE -
NAIROBI, MAY 2008
The World Bank Institute’s Knowledge for
Development Program and the Danish Government are currently organizing a
Regional forum on “Developing Technology and Innovation in Africa:
A forum for Practitioners and Policymakers”, to be held
May 12-14, 2008.
The forum, which builds on two previous fora
organized by the World Bank Institute, aims to discuss the modalities to
stimulate innovation and technology diffusion in six countries (Ghana,
Kenya, Mozambique, Rwanda, Tanzania, Uganda), and Africa as a whole. This
is in an overall context where the role of technology and innovation is
being recognized as primordial in the economic and social development of
countries, and of Africa in particular.
This is an invitation
to bid for innovative case studies, which would be showcased at the
forum. In order for the Forum to have a clear
relevance and concrete follow-up activities, it has been decided to limit
the number of invited countries to Ghana, Kenya, Mozambique, Tanzania,
Uganda and Rwanda and to focus on the following technology sectors:
agriculture, food industry, rural energy and physical environment
including water.
The reason for the choice of
technologies is linked to the fact that growth and productivity in
agriculture and food sectors is central to any strategy of reducing
poverty and increasing economic growth and development in African
countries. The Forum will focus on policies and incentives for fostering
innovation within agriculture and the agro-industrial sector and on
learning from innovative case studies in the four technology areas.
The format of the
Concept Notes is attached for further guidance. Please circulate this to
other colleagues in universities, private sector, agribusiness, etc.
Send the 3-page Concept Notes to me in the next two weeks
for onward transmission to the World Bank Institute for evaluation.
Successful Concept Notes will be funded and support will be extended to
participate in the Nairobi conference.
