GUIDE FOR AUTHORS
Articles will be accepted in English or French and will be published in the language of submission. Only abstracts will be published in both languages. Contributions are received with the understanding that they comprise original, unpublished material and are not being submitted for publication elsewhere. All articles are refereed to ensure both accuracy and relevance, and amendments to the script may thus be required before final acceptance.
Submission of manuscripts
On the first page of the manuscript, supply the authors’ names, affiliations and contact details (including full postal address, e-mail address and phone and fax number). Identify the corresponding author with an asterisk. There must be no other reference elsewhere in the manuscript that would identify an author. Submit the text, tables and figures in three separate files, all MSWord. Ensure all files are clearly labelled with the authors’ names.
Authors who do not have access to e-mail may mail their manuscript to: African Journal of Agricultural and Resource Economics Editorial Office Centre for Environmental Economics and Policy in Africa (CEEPA) Dept of Agricultural Economics Faculty of Natural and Agricultural Sciences University of Pretoria Room 2–6, Agric. Annex, Pretoria 0002, South Africa
In this case, authors should mail a digital copy of the manuscript, saved on disk, and one paper copy.
Please have the final version of your manuscript language edited before submitting it. We also recommend that you print out your article and check it thoroughly before submitting it.
Please ensure that you are sending us the final and complete version of your article.
Editing The Editors reserve the right to adjust style to certain standards of uniformity. After your article has been accepted it will be copy edited and any queries the copy editor may have will be e-mailed to you. Please reply to these promptly (within days). Be clear and specific in your responses and eliminate guesswork.
Proofs Proofs will be sent to authors for approval before publication (to the first named author if no corresponding author is identified for multi-authored articles) and must be returned within 48 hours of receipt. Corrections should be restricted to typesetting errors; any others may be charged to the author. Any queries must be answered in full. Please note that authors are urged to check their proofs carefully before returning them, since the inclusion of late corrections cannot be guaranteed.
CopyrightAll authors must sign the ‘Transfer of Copyright’ agreement before the article can be published. This transfer agreement enables the African Association of Agricultural Economists to protect the copyrighted material for the authors, without the author relinquishing his/her proprietary rights. The copyright transfer covers the exclusive rights to reproduce and distribute the article, including reprints, photographic reproductions, microfilm or any other reproductions of a similar nature, and translations. It also includes the right to adapt the article for use in conjunction with computer systems and programs, including reproduction or publication in machine-readable form and incorporation in retrieval systems. Authors are responsible for obtaining from the copyright holder permission to reproduce any material for which copyright already exists. Preparation of manuscripts
Layout Manuscripts must be double-spaced with wide margins, using Times New Roman, font size 12. Please number the pages.
Please do not use any automatic numbering or links.
LengthTechnical research articles should be 4000 to 6000 words in length. Longer articles will be accepted on an occasional basis if the topic demands this length of treatment. Policy notes should be 2000 to 3000 words in length. Book reviews are also welcomed (800 to 1200 words). These word lengths are for the complete submission, including abstract, footnotes, tables, references and appendices.
AbstractProvide an abstract of about 150 words, outlining in a single paragraph the aims, scope and conclusions of the article.
Section headingsOrganize the text under appropriate section headings
Please number sections manually and not with the auto numbering function.
FootnotesThese should be indicated in the text by superior Arabic numerals which run consecutively through the article (MSWord does this automatically). Do not use endnotes.
Units All measurements should be given in metric (SI) units.
Tables Submit all tables in a separate file from the text file. Mark in the text the places where the tables are to go, thus: [Place Table 1 here]. Number the tables consecutively and give each a caption above the table. Type any notes below the table and refer to these by superscript lowercase letters. Please do not create a table using tabs or the space bar. Use the appropriate table function on your computer program. Tables should not duplicate results presented elsewhere in the manuscript (e.g. in graphs). FiguresSubmit all figures (diagrams, graphs, charts, maps, photographs, etc.) in a separate file from the text file. Mark in the text the places where the figures are to go, thus: [Place Figure 1 here]. Number the figures consecutively and give each a caption, outside the figure, below the figure. All illustrations should be provided in camera-ready form, suitable for reproduction (which may include reduction) without retouching.
Line drawings Good quality printouts on white paper produced in black ink are required. All lettering, graph lines and points on graphs must be sufficiently large and bold to permit reproduction when the diagram has been reduced to a size suitable for inclusion in the journal. Dye-line prints or photocopies are not suitable for reproduction. Do not use any type of shading on computer-generated illustrations.
Photographs Original photographs must be supplied in the form in which they are to be reproduced (e.g. black and white or colour). If necessary, a scale should be marked on the photograph. Please note that photocopies of photographs are not acceptable.
Maps These should contain essential information only and be as clear as possible. Details and features should not be cramped or too small.
References and citations
Include an alphabetical list of references at the end of the paper.
Supply full details for each reference (e.g. the date and place of publication, the name of the printer or publisher, the volume and issue numbers of journals, the page range of articles and chapters, the day and month of seminars and conferences). When listing a website source, please include the date the source was accessed. List only the sources directly cited in the article. (Remember also to list sources of tables and figures.) Ensure that all sources cited are included in the list. Use the Harvard method, i.e. cite author’s name and the date of publication, thus: (Mapule 2000). Cite sources with two authors thus: (Smith & Jones 2002), and sources with more than two thus: (Hassan et al. 2004). When citing more than one source, use date order, thus: (Prinsloo 2000; Ncube 2003). List publications by the same author(s) in the same year as 2002a, 2002b, etc. Please check carefully to ensure that the spellings of authors' names and dates are exactly the same in the text as in the reference list. The following examples show the styles to use in the list of references.
