Dr Simeon Ehui Elected to the Executive
Committee of IAAE
Dr Simeon Ehui who is
a Fellow of African Association of Agricultural Economists (AAAE) was
successfully elected to the Executive Committee of International
Association of Agricultural Economists (IAAE) during its recently
concluded 26th international conference in Beijing. Dr Ehui will serve
as a member of the committee between 2009 and 2012. The formal

Sector Manager, Agriculture and Rural Development (SASSD)
Simeon Ehui, a
Fellow of African Association of Agricultural Economists (AAAE)
has recently been appointed as the new Sector Manager for Agriculture and
Rural Development (ARD) in the World Banks's Sustainable Development (SD)
Department of the South Asia Region. Full Story
I am very pleased to announce
the appointment of Simeon Ehui as the new Sector Manager for Agriculture
and Rural Development (ARD) in the Sustainable Development (SD)
Department of the South Asia Region. Simeon, a national of Cote Ivoire,
joined the Bank in 2003 after a distinguished career as a technical
specialist and manager in International Livestock Research Institute and
the International Institute of Tropical Agriculture. Simeon has a PhD in
agricultural economics from Purdue University and has published
extensively in his field. He is currently Sector Leader in the Africa
Region based in Abuja, Nigeria. Simeon brings wide experience and a
track record of success and innovation from his work in Africa. He is
well respected for his leadership abilities, incredible drive for
results and his highly developed people management skills. He is an
inclusive leader who easily works across boundaries. He will be a great
addition to our SD management team bringing vision, terrific client
skills and a wonderful problem solving approach. Simeon's three
priorities in South Asia will be: (i) provide technical and managerial
leadership and strategic vision for the agriculture and rural
development agenda in South Asia with a special focus on reinvigorating
the Bank’s knowledge and analytic work; (ii) lead a shift to a middle
income country focus for South Asia’s clients with a particular emphasis
on South-South learning, cross-sectoral programs and the impact of
climate change on agriculture; and (iii) support the introduction of
innovative lending and knowledge products to help our clients achieve
development results. So please join me in welcoming Simeon here in SAR.

AAAE Distinguished Fellow Citation
Simeon
Ehui, a national Côte d'Ivoire, completed both his B.S and M A. degrees in
Economics from the National University of Côte d’Ivoire, in 1980 and 1981
respectively. Benefiting from scholarships from the government of Côte
d’Ivoire and the United States Department of Agriculture, Simeon completed
his M.Sc and Ph.D. degrees in Agricultural Economics from Purdue
University in Indiana, USA in 1983 and 1987 respectively.
Simeon
started his professional career in 1988 as a Rockefeller Foundation Social
Science Research Fellow while posted at the International Institute of
Tropical Agriculture (IITA) in Ibadan, Nigeria, one of the 15 centers of
the Consultative Group on International Agricultural Research (CGIAR). For
13 years (1990-2003), Simeon worked at the International Livestock
Research Institute, another CGIAR center where he led the socio-economic
and policy research programs.
Simeon's research has concentrated on agricultural development policy,
international trade and natural resource management. He has published over
100 publications. Most recently he was Coordinating Lead Author of the
Chapter on Food Ecosystem Services in the Millennium Ecosystem volume on
Ecosystems and Human-Well Being: Current States and Trends (2006). He also
co-edited a book on Strategies for Sustainable Land Management in the East
African Highlands (2006) published by the International Food Policy
Research Institute (IFPRI). Recently he co-published a paper on “Livestock
productivity n Developing Countries: An Assessment” in the Handbook of
Agricultural Economics (2007) and published a lead article on “Identifying
agricultural research and development investment opportunities in
sub-Saharan Africa” in the first issue of the African Journal of
Agricultural and Resource Economics (2006)
Simeon
has received several awards and honors including the 2006 and 2007 World
Bank Africa Region Awards for excellence. In 2001 Purdue University named
him “Distinguished Agricultural Alumnus in recognition of his outstanding
accomplishments and significant contributions to Agricultural Economics
profession and to Society. In 2006 he received the Zayeb International
Prize for the Environment as an author of the “Millennium Ecosystem
Assessment” for Scientific and Technological Achievements in Environment.
In 2001, he and is colleagues were awarded the Neville Clarke Award of
the International Livestock Research Institute (ILRI) in recognition of
innovative and productive ILRI teams.
Simeon
also served or is serving in several international committees including
the Advisory Board of the State of Food and Agriculture of the Food and
Agriculture Organization of the United Nations ((2002-present),
the Advisory Board of the International Food Policy Research Institute (IFPRI)
project on Successes in African Agriculture (2000-2002), the International
Committee of the American Agricultural Economics Association (Chair,
2003-2004), the Editorial Board of the African Journal of Agricultural
Economics (2006- present),
the Steering
Committee of the Eastern and Central Africa Program for Agricultural
Policy Analysis (1997 -Present), the IUCN (International Union for the
Conservation of Nature) Commission on Ecosystem Management, 2002-2004.
Simeon participated in the
Third
External Program and Management Review Panel of CIRAD-EMVT (Centre
International pour la Recherche et le Developpement-Ecole de Medicine
Veterinaire Tropicale,
2002-2003),
the Second External Program and Management Review of the World
Agroforestry Center (ICRAF,
2005-2006)
and the Center-Commissioned External Review of the Institutions, Markets,
Policy and Impacts Theme the International Crop Research Institute for the
Semi Arid Tropics (Chair, 2006-2007).
Simeon
has 20 years of international agricultural research and development
experience in Africa, and Asia. He is currently Lead Economist and Sector
Leader in the Sustainable Development Department of the World Bank and is
based in Abuja, Nigeria.
