Dr. Adrian Mukhebi, Ph.D.
Agricultural Economist, was honoured by the African Association of
Agricultural Economists (AAAE) as a Fellow of the AAAE at the AAAE
Conference held in Accra, Ghana, August 20-22, 2007. With a membership
throughout Africa, the AAAE brings together professional Agricultural
Economists in Africa working in various capacities in
Government,Universities and Research Institutions, Private Sector, NGOs
and Civil Society.
Dr. Mukhebi was among the only
4 Members of the AAAE who were honoured by the AAAE within AAAE Fellowship
at the conference for outstanding contribution to the profession of
Agricultural Economics in Africa.
The AAAE cited Dr. Mukhebi’s
sustained efforts at the Kenya Agricultural Commodity Exchange Limited (KACE)
over the years, in making agricultural markets to work better, more
efficient, for the farmer, especially for the smallholder farmer in Kenya.
This was recognized as a significant contribution to the profession of
agricultural economics, and as something young professional members of the
AAAE should emulate. The AAAE recognized the fact that KACE innovations,
especially those concerning the application of modern information and
communication technologies (ICTs) such as the mobile phone and the
internet in agriculture, are having a positive impact on farmers and
agricultural development, and are being scaled out to, or emulated, in
other countries throughout the continent: Malawi, Uganda, Nigeria, Ghana,
Zambia, Ethiopia, to name a few.
Dr. Mukhebi is the Chairman of
KACE, and also the Chairman of the Agribusiness Development Program of the
Ministry of Agriculture – Danish Government Cooperation. He was also
awarded the International Ashoka Fellowship Award in Social
Entrepreneurship in 2005.
