3rd AAAE Conference

AAAE conducts its flagship triennial conferences -- held in rotation -- around East, West, South, North and central Africa cities. The meetings typically attract about 500 delegates from around the world. At the conferences, professionals and students in the field of agricultural and applied economics have the opportunity to present their researches, learn about the latest trends, interact and network with other delegates. A series of smaller Inter-conference conventions are in the pipeline to be held annually at various locations in Africa.  Our members participate also in a wide range of other conferences around the world.

The 3rd joint AAAE/AEASA Conference, 19 - 23 September 2010, Cape Town, South Africa

Theme: "Food and Financial Crisis: The Way Forward"

The 3rd International Conference was held in September 2010 in Cape Town, South Africa. This was a joint conference with Agricultural Economics Association of South Africa (AEASA). The conference focused mainly on Policies and Strategies for Agricultural Development in Sub-Saharan Africa. Young scientists especially  those from the Collaborative Master’s Program in Agriculture and Applied Economics attended the conference, and had the opportunity to access exposure to new research and analytical methods, and network with renowned agricultural economists.

This conference worked to re-energize the network of agricultural economists and development specialists to be positioned well in informing agricultural policy and development in Africa. The participants were able to effectively engage with the New Partnership for Africa’s Development (NEPAD), the Comprehensive Africa Agriculture Development Programme (CAADP), Regional Economic Communities (RECs), and the Forum for Agricultural Research in Africa (FARA) among other continental initiatives on agriculture

AAAE delegates found the experience of hosting the joint conference with colleagues from AEASA very positive. The Conference was attended by 407 delegates from 34 countries around the world.  Over 200 papers and posters were presented. For the first time, this conference held a special plenary session for China and Africa that featured four presentations.

Support for the conference came from some of our traditional donors, including the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation (BMGF), Alliance for a Green Revolution in Africa (AGRA), International Association of Agricultural Economists (IAAE), and Amalgamated Banks of South Africa Limited (ABSA). Other platinum sponsors included South Africa’s Department of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries, Department of Agriculture of the Western Cape Provincial Government, Development Bank of Southern Africa (DBSA), Land Bank and the National Agricultural Marketing Council.

Professor Nick Vink of the University of Stellenbosch was elected as the 3rd President of the association.
