2nd AAAE Conference

AAAE conducts its flagship triennial conferences -- held in rotation -- around East, West, South, North and central Africa cities. The meetings typically attract about 500 delegates from around the world. At the conferences, professionals and students in the field of agricultural and applied economics have the opportunity to present their researches, learn about the latest trends, interact and network with other delegates. A series of smaller Inter-conference conventions are in the pipeline to be held annually at various locations in Africa.  Our members participate also in a wide range of other conferences around the world.  

The 2nd International Conference, 20 - 22 August 2007, Accra, Ghana

Theme: “Agricultural Growth, Poverty Reduction and Millennium Development Goals in Africa” 

The second AAAE Conference was held in Accra, Ghana. Over 200 scientists and development specialists from across Africa were invited and participated. A program committee established by the Executive Committee of the association and the Local Organizing Committee led the review of abstracts and papers. Applicants with outstanding papers and posters in methodology, results and their applications were identified and invited to make oral and poster presentations at the conference. The conference theme was; . This was further broken down into six sub-themes:

  • Improved Markets for African Farmers for Poverty Reduction
  • Advancing Technical Change in Africa Agriculture
  • The Role of Agriculture in Poverty Reduction: Recent Experiences from Africa
  • Expanding the Frontiers of Agricultural Economics to Meet the Challenges of Agricultural Development in Achieving the Millennium Development Goals
  • Meeting Africa’s Food and Nutrition Challenges
  • Agriculture, Environment and Sustainable Development

Over 400 conference proceedings were published and distributed to association members during the 3rd conference in Cape Town, South Africa. Several other proceedings were sent to university libraries, while some were given out during various forums where the association participated. 

Support for this conference came from the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, the Rockefeller Foundation, International Development Research Centre, International Food Policy Research Institute, International Association of Agricultural Economists, Food and Agriculture Organization, Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency, African Economic Research Consortium and the International Center for Soil Fertility and Agricultural Development . The Ghana Association of Agricultural Economists collaborated with AAAE to make this conference a success. 

Dr. Akinwumi A. Adesina – current Federal Minister for Agriculture and Regional Development of Nigeria – was elected as the 2nd President of the association.
